It seems like it was only a short time ago that Bubba The Love Sponge resigned with Sirius, but it was in fact in December of 2007, and was a one year term. This means that Bubba’s current deal, which also allows him to have a show on terrestrial radio is set to expire in just under two months.

In the past, contract time for Bubba has meant listeners had to endure rants and raves from him on how he is not getting respect, or not getting enough money. It was that type of ranting that led me to tune Bubba out last year. Core Bubba fans go along with the rants of Bubba, but to casual listeners, it had a turn-off and tune out effect. I had many readers indicate that they were just tired of listening to Bubba complain, and it seemed that Sirius was not thrilled with Bubba’s tactics either.

As contract time rolls around, it will be interesting to see exactly what Bubba does. We don’t want to hear about “iPod Willey”, or complaints about how much Mad Dog Russo is being paid. We want to hear the Bubba show without all of the contract drama. Can Bubba keep it real? Can he separate the contract from the show? That will be interesting to see.

Bubba does have a core group of fans that is passionate. What he needs is to grow his audience on a continual basis. The connection we saw with the Stern show early on seems to have faded. There is not as much talk on Stern about what is happening on Bubba. Personally, I think the happenings just before the last contract signing alienated Bubba in many ways. He alienated himself from Sirius, Stern, and his casual listeners. Yes, the core fans enjoyed the show and will say that Bubba simply speaks his mind. However, this is business, and sometimes in business speaking your mind on the air will not help your cause. Bubba needs to understand listener sentiment on the current economy, and know that hearing a millionaire complain about money will not resonate with listeners.

With the merger now complete, there are many things that can be considered. The number of Shock Jocks has doubled, and this gives Sirius XM options. I do not see Opie and Anthony on Stern channels, but could it be possible to see Ron and Fez? Or is it possible that someone else from terrestrial will make the move to satellite.

Now, I understand that what I am saying about Bubba may not be popular with the core fans, but it does need to be considered. The show can be funny and entertaining. However, once you lose a listener it is tough to get them back. Personally, I have listened to Bubba maybe 5 times in the past year. I switched to Jay Thomas on Sirius Stars 102. He is funny, topical, and handles contract time very casually. Thomas already appears on Stern’s channel on Friday mornings already, and goes head to head with Bubba in the afternoon.

Would I like to see Bubba re-signed?
Sure, if the deal makes business sense to all parties.

Do I think signing him is imperative?
No, core fans will be angered, but in the end, the company needs to weigh the value of Bubba against what he brings to the company.

Do i think a deal will be reached?
Yes.

Will Bubba tow the line and not start weeks of complaining?
This task may be harder than the deal negotiations, but i certainly hope he can just leave the negotiations to the back room.

Position - Long SIRI

Title: Keep Bubba

Not to play English teacher on you, but it's "Toe the line". It's obvious you listen to Bubba quite often, and as a Stern fan, I would hate to see him go. Honestly, his show banter is much better than Howard's these days IN MY OPINION. I LOVE Bubba, and I would be sad to see him go, but I won't cancel my Sirius because of it. I won't cancel my Sirius when Howard leaves either, because there's so much more than these two. I just hope the company can stay afloat.

Hey Steve, Why don't you get the d*** out your ear and you would notic Bubbas show is by far better then your precious O&A. Well never mind if you got it out of your ear you would probably put it in your mouth.

Bubba has not been to Stern's wedding So I'm not so sure the author has been listening much . Howard has been praising him on almost a daily basis , he also had him to his house this past summer . Mr Savery you need to do better research

I think Bubba should be renewed but at a lower salary. I agree with one of the other posters, his show has gone downhill since doing two shows a day. I am also getting sick and tired hearing him bitch about being tired. Bubba, you aren't the only one in the world working 12 hr days.
Bubba did go to Stern's wedding.

I agree the research is poor at best. Bubba and his producer Brent were both at Sterns wedding. All the research he needs to do is listen to both shows fir a couple of days to see that Bubba is very quite about the contract. At least as quiet as he can be. He has taken the "no bubbles no troubles" approach. Stern as well is continually impressed by the content and entertainment level of Bubbas show. I wonder if this is a back door shot at Stern and Sirius given the latest poor reporting of wrong info by the LA Times. It seems that the piling on of anti-satelite radio reporting has started up again.

Bubba has core fans but thats about it. His show has become flat since he took on the terrestrial audience. He doesnt care about anything but himself. So it is all about the money. Why should Sirius renew someone with no audience. It's a joke O&A moving on the Stern channels would be a better move for Sirius. And based on Sirius's latest stock price of 40 cents, it's time to start dumping the crap like Bubba and get to rreal program that will keep Sirius subscribers - Bubba aint it. By the way, he did not attendHowards wedding, Bubba is an embarassment to Sirius with all his whining and complaining. It's time to get rid of him.

Bubba is great listening, he was at the Stern wedding and I hope he stays on Sirius. The show has gone down since he started the 2 shows a day but that's not too surprising. I'll take watered down Bubba over no Bubba any day.

Title: DUMP the FAT guy - Bubber

Bubber is not #2 anymore after the merger, Opie and Anthony have more fans and listeners. Get your facts straight. Its Howard then Opie and Anothy, then Ron and Fez, next Bubber.

BS, bubba has many more listeners than o and a
On October 25, 2007, it was revealed that Opie and Anthony's weekly satellite audience was 216,800 - well behind the numbers alleged by their former rival, Howard Stern, although still substantially less than Stern's estimated audience of 3 to 4 million. Opie and Anthony contest the numbers and say they make more for XM than Howard does for Sirius. XM Executive Vice President of Programming Eric Logan also stated that the 216,800 number was partially taken when O&A was suspended from the XM airwaves in April-May 2007 and estimated their weekly numbers as actually being in excess of a million.[15] The fall 2007 ratings, taken while Opie and Anthony were not suspended actually showed a drop in audience from the spring 2007 ratings to 171,300.
Title: Bubba OWNS

Bubba always owns the rights to all of his broadcasts. I think that is the main issue with the contract talks. Sirius probably would want the rights to rebroadcast any portion of his show without paying him more. Sirius probably does NOT want any portion of his Sirius show broadcasted anywhere else in the future. Unlike Howard, Bubba has ALWAYS owned all of the content on his show during his entire career. Howard doesn't own his show, Sirius does. Bubba does own his show and broadcasts using his own studios and his own money for production. Signing a contract with Bubba is like signing a contract for NASCAR. NASCAR owns the product, Sirius just rents the product for broadcast and it is the same with Bubba. Howard has made comments in the past about how Bubba has been smart throughout his career to always own the content of his shows. Mel has even said on Howard's show that he wanted Bubba exclusively on Sirius(means wants to own the Bubba show). That will never happen and that is why we may not see Bubba again on satellite radio until his Cox contract is up.

I love the Bubba show, I listened to Ron and Fez back when it was the Ron and Ron show. O & A I have no use for and find their show less entertaining than Mancow these days. That being said, if Bubba is not resigned the only thing my Sirius would be good for is nat having to find a different station every so many miles. I dont think that would be worth the cost of subscription anymore. I hope that Bubba is resigned, I love listening to the show and anymore HOWARD is just filler to me wating for the next Bubba show or replay.

Bubba has it made. He has a terrestrial show where he has to behave and a Sirius show where he can vent. HOW long do you think he will last on terrestrial radio before he says or does something he's not supposed to, especially if he isnt on Sirius anymore. Sometimes it seems like he doesnt care about his Sirius listeners. Without us paying our fees, there is no Bubba.
