Investors in the satellite radio sector have a new derivative investment option to consider in Foundry Networks. Foundry announced today that XM is utilizing Foundry components in their music delivery.

Foundry Networks®, Inc. (NASDAQ: FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, today announced that XM Satellite Radio, Inc., America’s number one satellite radio company, installed Foundry’s™ BigIron®, FastIron® SuperX™, FastIron SX 800 and FastIron Edge X series Layer 2/3 switches to power their satellite broadcasts to subscribers. With XM’s customer base of more than 8.5 million subscribers, Foundry delivers the high standards of performance that XM Radio demands.

XM offers more than 170 digital channels of music, news, talk, sports, comedy and children’s programming. Subscribers across the continental United States listen to XM on satellite radios for the car, home, office, and portable use. Select XM channels are also heard on DIRECTV and the XM Radio Mobile service available for AT&T and Alltel wireless phones.

“All of our satellite and Internet streaming music production networks run on Foundry’s networking equipment,” said Damon Love, director, Content Distribution Systems for XM Radio’s Broadcast Operations Group. “Because of the high-performance of Foundry’s BigIron, FastIron SuperX, SX, and Edge X switches, we are able to efficiently scale our infrastructure to provide more channels while still achieving low-latency audio delivery. Since Foundry’s FastIron SuperX, SX, and Edge X switches are built from the same ASIC family, we are very confident that once we lab test a Foundry software release, we can deploy the release out to our enterprise networks and get predictable operation and performance.”

“We are pleased that XM Radio selected Foundry’s BigIron and FastIron family of award-winning switches to provide industry-leading networking performance and scalability at a compelling value,” said Bob Schiff, vice president and general manager for Foundry’s Enterprise Business Unit. “XM Radio’s growing base of satellite radio subscribers demand exceptional performance from their network. Foundry’s networking solutions will help deliver high performance, reliability, availability, and scalability for XM Radio’s rapidly growing network infrastructure in order for them to deliver the best possible satellite radio content and service to millions of listeners.”
