(NewsVisual, powered by IntellectSpace) -- As nervousness surrounding concerns over a recession persisted in many sectors of the economy, the world’s largest retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE: WMT) reported on Tuesday morning an increase of 8.3 percent in net sales and increase of 4.0 percent in net income the same period last fiscal year, the company reported in a statement.
Specifically, income increased from $3.9 billion last year’s Q4 to $4.1 billion in this Q4.
“For the fourth quarter, we topped $100 billion in sales, the first time in history that any retailer has reached this milestone in a single quarter,” said Wal-Mart CEO/President Lee Scott in the company’s statement.
He added the following points about the company’s performance:
“We had a very strong underlying operating performance, exceeding our expectations for the quarter. In addition to another year of record sales and earnings, we also delivered a record return to our shareholders this year through more than $11 billion in share repurchase and dividends.”
The markets responded favorably to Wal-Mart’s earnings announcement, sending its share price up from the previous close of $49.44 to $49.86 in afternoon trading (1:44pm ET).
