(By Arun - iStockAnalyst Writer) Here’s a look at the earnings review from today’s stocks, a chunk of which are Chinese ADR’s. In the background of the new stimulus program announced by the Chinese government, the Asian markets have seen a much needed rebound.
Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT) reported revenue in the third quarter of $2.32Bn decreased 14 percent year over year and down 1 percent on a year-to-date basis. The company has announced a new operating model effective January 1, 2009. Nortel will decentralize several corporate functions and transition to a vertically integrated business unit structure to give greater financial and operational control to the business units, increase accountability for overall performance, and reduce the duplication inherent in matrix organizations. Orders were $2,017Mn in the third quarter of 2008, compared to $2,377Mn for the third quarter of 2007, and $2,153Mn for the second quarter of 2008. Compared to the third quarter of 2007, orders were primarily impacted by lower CDMA orders in North America and lower ES orders (growth in North America was more than offset by declines in other geographies), partially offset by growth in GS and MEN. Book to bill in the third quarter was 0.87. MEN book-to bill was a strong 1.08. R&D expense was $377Mn in the third quarter of 2008, compared to $416Mn for the third quarter of 2007 and $441Mn for the second quarter of 2008.
DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH) today reported total revenue of $2.94Bn for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008, a 5.1 percent increase compared with $2.79Bn for the corresponding period in 2007. Net income totaled $92Mn for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008, compared with $200Mn during the corresponding period in 2007. The $108Mn decline in net earnings primarily related to impairments on marketable and non-marketable securities. Basic earnings per share were $0.20 for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008, compared with basic earnings per share of $0.45 during the corresponding period in 2007. DISH Network lost approximately 10,000 net subscribers during the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008, ending the quarter with approximately 13.78Mn subscribers.
Pike Electric Corporation (NYSE: PEC) Total revenues for the first quarter of 2009 increased $45.8Mn to $185.5Mn, compared to $139.7Mn in the first quarter of fiscal 2008. Net income for the first quarter of fiscal 2009 totaled $18.3Mn, or $0.54 per diluted share, compared to net income of $5.3Mn, or $0.16 per diluted share, for the first quarter of fiscal 2008. On September 1, 2008 the Company completed the acquisition of Energy Delivery Services, Inc. ("EDS") for $24.5Mn.
