Daily Report For Friday, Mar 13, 2009

 March 13, 2009 12:00 PM

Equity market prices lifted pretty much from start to finish of Thursday's session.

Retail Sales, Jobless Claims and Business Inventories and comments from Barney Frank and Tim Geithner played a role in the general bullishness. The latter made comments on the dangers of ending the mark-to-market rule and instead believe subtle changes could be made in an effort to improve it.

Pfizer (PFE) made a big splash with the announcement its Phase III trial of Sutent was stopped early as the drug showed a significant benefit in patients with pancreatic cancer.

At the close, the DJIA (+239.66 +3.46% to 7170.06), S&P 500 (+29.38% to 750.74) and NASDAQ (+54.46 +3.97% to 1426.10) were up sharply for the second day in the past three. The Toronto Composite (+271.25 +3.39% to 8282.27) and Venture Board (+19.52 +2.37% to 843.42) were almost as strong.

The winning sector by a wide margin was Financial (XLF +10.3%). There were no losers. Banks ($BKX soared +11.2%) and REITs ($DJR +7.9%) were the winning industry groups.

Among the Cara 100 stocks that lifted the most, Deutsche Bank (DB +14.6%) was a winner among the 96 of 100 that gained on the day. Of the four losers, only VIP and SYT were notables.

Bonds lifted a bit (+0.50% to 127.77).

The $USD dropped again, losing -0.28% to 87.35, and the Euro lifted +0.65% to 129.16.

Oil continued to move higher ahead of this weekend's OPEC meeting to review production policy. Reports have indicated that Saudi Arabia will push for more compliance with prior production cuts instead of announcing more cuts. Crude Oil prices gained +$3.98/bbl to 47.97.

After dropping -$44.80/oz over the previous two days, $GOLD futures gained +$14.80/oz on Wednesday and a further +13.30/oz yesterday, closing at 924.00. The futures are even stronger today.

Precious metal spot prices at 8:26am ET were for gold, palladium, platinum and silver: 936.20; 197; 1053.5; and 13.27.

Earlier in the day today, Asia-Pacific equity markets soared: Japan (+5.15% to 7569.3), Australia (+3.27% to 3294.7), Hong Kong (+4.37% to 12525.8) and India (+4.95% to 8756.6). Shanghai China (-0.24% to 2128.8) was soft for a third straight day.

At 8:20am ET today, the French CAC (+2.10%), the German DAX (+1.97%), and the UK FTSE 100 (+2.38%) were in rally mode. At that point the DJIA futures were up +52 to 7220.

The $USD futures were softer and the Euro stronger.

The US equity market has opened to softer prices, which harbors well for buying into the close after the European bourses are closed. That is usually a tell for the end of the week action, and a determinant of how I make subsequent trades today.

Sorry to be late, but there is too much to do in too little time.

Received from a broker:

Commodities experienced its second highest month of net inflows since inception of the fund tracker, with +$7.1 billion (the record was $10 billion in Feb 2008). While we are only two months into the year, inflows have already reached $12.1 billion, following a very similar trajectory to last year's initial flows.
• The theme song continues; investors continue to favor specific commodity exposure rather than the broad asset class. Beta specialty funds are driving most of the inflows, largely into exchange-traded products.
Enhanced beta and alpha Exchange Traded Products (ETP) received net inflows this month of around $750 million.
• Gold is the main beneficiary of flows, followed by oil. Precious metals funds saw net inflows of $6 billion this month. Gold-specific funds saw even higher flows of $6.6 billion this month, and $9 billion year-to-date.
• Energy-linked funds also saw continued investor interest, with net inflows into the sector reaching $1.8 billion in February, and $3.4 billion year-to-date.
• Agriculture-linked ETPs generated moderate positive inflows of $170 million this month, resulting in +$461 million year-to-date.

Commentary from the CTAB trader's conference call:

Just when we were beginning to think bull moves had been secretly outlawed by the new administration (new form of tax the rich, and wealth redistribution), out of nowhere comes a strong 3-day +10.96% rally in the S&P. Let Financial Entertainment Television bring out the pompoms and tell everyone how they nailed the bottom, while serious traders assess risk going forward.

Although the market has done nothing wrong and all the right sectors enjoyed strong gains on Thursday, volume began to tail off a bit, and the broad market has rallied back to the initial resistance, the November lows. So, risk management is still an issue as our clients will see in their accounts.

The Financial sector (XLF + 10.57%) has been soaring all week long, with stalwarts Goldman (GS + 31.5% this week), JP Morgan (JPM + 45.91%), and Morgan Stanley (MS + 46.72%) leading the charge. Are these stocks going to double from the bottom? Absolutely! Are they going to do it in one week? Probably not.

Although the first moves up off of Bear lows are relentlessly strong, that doesn't mean you throw caution to the wind, going all-in until they meet your profit objective. Expectations for some sort of relaxation of the mark-to-market rules; bringing back the uptick rule; and a massive amount of short-covering have been the catalysts for this move.

We pared our XLF position on the close yesterday with expectations the financials are due for a mild pullback. However, if they go sideways here and mark time for a few sessions, the big boys may be aware of massive buy programs into option expiry next week. If you feel this situation is unfolding, purchasing out of the money calls in heavily shorted banks and brokers would be a good risk/reward strategy for a potential huge short squeeze.

The market usually has some information to give to traders paying attention. The early morning market reaction to downgrade to General Electrics credit and debt downgrade (GE + 12.72%) was very telling. Bad news was already priced into the stock, and so the buying that did come in lifted all financial stocks, pressuring money managers to get further invested now.

Crude oil (USO + 7.19%) jumped again Thursday, providing further evidence the late February lows may not be breached for a very long time. We remain bullish on oil, believing commodities in general are about to lift over the intermediate term.

We lightened up positions at the close, selling calls against long stock in SU, GRMN, and CTSH, and paring back QQQQ, XLF, and SMH. Given the 3-day lift that carried right into first resistance, prudence dictated booking some profits and observing the market action the next few days. If 755 on the S&P is taken out, look for next resistance around 800 to contain this initial leg of the rally.

Successful traders know when to take chips off the table, minimizing overnight risk. One thing definitely not working over the past few years has been carrying long positions for longer than a few days. If this market puts together a string of 6 or 7 days up in a row, it would be a change of character, something to be duly noted, another indication the Bear may be in hibernation. Once we see a fundamental change in sentiment, we will be ready to buy longs (stocks and calls) on break-outs.

Have a great day.
