(8:36am ET) On Thursday, the upbeat earnings report of (Cara 100) Best Buy (BBY) served to lift the market at the open. Technologies stocks later were the basis of a closing hour rally. At the close, the DJIA (+174.75 +2.25% to 7924.56), S&P 500 (+18.98 +2.33% to 832.86), and NASDAQ (+58.05 +3.80% to 1587.00) gained for the third day in four this week.
The Toronto Composite (+198.06 +2.25% to 8995.50) was in line with NY, but the Toronto Venture Board (+24.98 +2.63%to 974.02) also rallied.
In the US equity market, the big winners were the Industrials (XLI +5.4%), Consumer Disretionary (XLY +4.6%) and Basic Materials (XLB +4.0%). All ten sectors were winners, but the laggards on this day were Energy +0.9% and Financials (XLF +1.2%).
Within the many industry groups, there were a broad section of technology groups that were on the leader board. Lagging a bit were the Goldminers ($XAU +0.7%).
Among the Cara 100 stocks that lifted the most yesterday, Best Buy (BBY +12.6%) on 193% average daily volume, First Solar (FSLR +12.2%), Starbucks (SBUX +11.0%) and Brunswick Corp (BC +9.8%).

The five Cara 100 losers were a mixed list led by Kinross Gold (KGC -2.2%) and MICC (MICC -1.6%).

The 30-year US Treasury bonds recovered +0.64% to close at 128.58. The yields on the 30-, 10-, and 5=year Treasuries closed the session at 3.651, 2.733, and 1.783, respectively.
The $USD gained +0.46% to close at 84.16, and is stronger (85.36) in early trading this morning. The Euro lost -0.38% to 135.26 and is weak this morning (133.53). The Yen lost -1.19% to 101.26, while the Pound ($XBP -0.58% to 144.57) also lost. The Cdn Loonie ($CDW +0.09% to 81.25) was flat.
Oil prices were stronger ($WTIC +$1.57/bbl to 54.34) for the 5th session in the past six, but are down about -$1.06/bbl I futures this morning at 6am ET.
$GOLD futures closed up +$0.50/oz yesterday, followed by some weakness. At 5:56am ET this morning, precious metal spot prices (compared to yesterday morning) for gold, palladium, platinum and silver were at: 929.09 (939.06), 219 (218), 1138.5 (1148), and 13.41 (13.59) shows some weakening as the $USD has gained strength.
Earlier in the day today, international equity markets were very quiet. For instance, Asia-Pacific markets were as follows: Tokyo (-0.11% to 8627.0), Hong Kong (+0.07% to 14119.5), Shanghai (+0.54% to 2374.4), Australia (+0.82% to 3515.6), and India (+0.15% to 10018.1).
In Europe at 6am ET, the French CAC (-0.29%), German DAX (-0.31%) and UK FTSE (+0.20%) have stayed quiet for a second session, possibly showing concern over the outcome of the next week's G-20 meeting.
DJIA equity futures are down -54 at 7795 at 6am ET.
Politics continue to be played out in Washington and NY as the Treasury Secretary has a two-pronged initiative of fighting regulatory reform, as well as try to address bank capital issues.
Commentary from the CTAB trader's conference call:
Another roller coaster session as an early morning attempt to vault the S&P 825-830 level was quickly rejected as sellers pushed the index down -1.5% from highs. Several hours later, however, under-invested money managers, emboldened by a successful midday bond auction, used the sell-off to aggressively accumulate semiconductors (SMH + 5.31%), with Cara 100 stocks Intel (INTC +5.76%), SanDisk (SNDK + 7.28%), and Applied Materials (AMAT + 5.46%) leading the charge.
Bulls have had a stellar past few weeks, but how much higher can the market climb? So, we again took profits on many positions.
The recent rally has been swift, leaving countless stocks extended and overbought as we discussed yesterday. J.C. Penney (JCP +5.55%) has gained over +30% over the past few weeks, so it was time to say goodbye. A SNDK stock and an Apple (AAPL + 2.97%) option position were also shown the door.
Although we remain very bullish on gold, positions need to be trimmed if individual positions become too large a percentage holding after an extended run. Thus we had to sell some GoldCorp (GG +0.58%) options, booking a gain of +200% on the purchase in less than a week.
Try as we might, we haven't been able to find many good ideas the past few days. Having to take profits on stocks purchased at the proper price and time, awaiting more favorable risk-reward set-ups is what all prudent managers should do. The market, we believe, is going to encounter significant resistance between 850 and 900 on the S&P.
Take note of the Cara RSI tool readings, with many daily RSI-7 readings over 70. With many years experience, we know this is an area to look to taking profits and build cash, not to chase strength.
Since the service started in late November, our clients are at 108 with a basis of 100 versus the S&P at 92. We have accomplished this result in an unstable market environment, using only about 30% of buying power, leaving about 70% on average in cash.
We do the work and our clients sleep at night. That's how our service was designed. In terms of the work part, we would prefer to be putting on fewer trades, but we have to play the cards the market gives us. As long as the global financial system is so unstable, we regret to say those conditions are likely to persist.
