The next market session will close:

(8:05am ET) Stocks closed Monday's session in NY lower on a lightly-traded day, but much higher Week over Week. Through Friday, the major market indexes saw their largest four-week gains in seventy-six years. Now the market is preparing for 1Q2009 earnings season, which gets underway today with Alcoa (AA).

On Monday, the DJIA (-41.74 -0.52% to 7975.85), S&P (-7.02 -0.83% to 835.48), and NASDAQ (-15.16 -0.93% to 1606.71) could not make headway against concerns the major banks may be preparing to release negative quarterly reports. The Toronto Composite (-49.59 -0.55% to 9016.17), and Venture Board (-12.42 -1.27% to 963.17) were also down on the day, but higher Week over Week.

In international equity markets today, the closing prices showed losses except for Shanghai China (+0.80% to 2439.2): Australia -1.30% to 3648.5; Hong Kong -0.46% to 14929.0; India -1.80% to 10534.9; and Japan -0.28% to 8832.9.

At 7:30am ET, France (-1.21%); Germany (-1.21%); and UK (-1.79%) were all down, also on concerns that earnings season may be disappointing.

Once again on Monday, the leader in the Cara 100 was Research In Motion (RIMM +7.9% on +97% higher than average daily volume. The 82 Cara 100 losers on the day were led by Brunswick Corp (BC -7.2%), Silver Wheaton (SLW -6.0%), and Juniper Networks (JNPR -5.7%).

In NY, the Financial sector (XLF -2.7%) was the weakest, led south by Banks ($BKX -3.8%) and Broker-Dealers ($XBD -3.4%). The Goldminers ($XAU -3.4%) also suffered as gold futures ($GOLD -$24.00/oz) suffered another pullback, closing at 869.30, which is less than the 880 support that had appeared strong until yesterday. Pundits like Marc Faber are now calling for 750 gold. Aussie technical analyst is calling for 800 with primary support at 700.

At 7:35am ET today, spot (cash) market prices for gold, palladium, platinum and silver were: 876.62, 221, 1151, and 12.12. Silver, which is viewed as a leading indicator of precious metals prices, has suffered the biggest declines in the past couple days.

Yesterday, US Treasury yields on the 30-, 10-, and 5-year lifted to 3.758, 2.939, and 1.899, respectively. The long bond ($USB) dropped -0.71% to 126.08.

Crude Oil ($WTIC -$1.46/bbl) closed yesterday at 51.05, which is the same price in the futures this morning.

The DJIA futures were 7811 (-105) at 7:30am ET.

Trader’s conference call notes:

S&P futures encountered strong selling at 847 in pre-market trading Monday, unable to extend Friday’s late upside reversal, with equity prices subsequently coming under pressure for most of the session. Volume was lackluster; short-term oriented traders were uncomfortable chasing strength, and long-term oriented were hoping for pullbacks to increase long positions, amid a holiday shortened trading week.

The S&P finished modestly lower ( SPX -0.85%), the NASDAQ off -28.42 points closing at 2720, US Treasuries reversing to close lower (TLT -0.43%), and gold clobbered again (GLD -2.5%).

While we see equities moving higher over the intermediate term, short-term momentum indicators are beginning to diverge from price, a cautionary sign to be closely monitored. This does not necessarily mean prices will plummet immediately, only that the trajectory of the relentless rise is flattening, meaning prices could be peaking. If prices begin to fall we will look to establish longs on weakness at 805 basis the S&P future, then 775, and finally the 750 level.

While the fundamentals unquestionably favor higher gold prices, the money flow and technical picture remain murky. GLD peaked just under 99 on Feb 20, selling off to a low of 87.50 on March 10, a decline of 11.5 points. Gold then rallied for to a high of 94.77 on March 19, giving an equality projection of approximately 83.25. The 50% retracement of the November to February rally is around 83.7, the spring 2008 low 83.57, and the simple 200-day moving average 84.75. The daily RSI-7 of 21.5 means gold is very oversold short term, so traders looking at add to long positions can now look at the 83.25-84.75 area to initiate new longs. Breaking it down further, a gap lower on Tuesday into the aforementioned area, followed by a break above the first hour high (opening range breakout), aggressive traders can buy the breakout, placing stops just below the first hour lows. Good risk reward, defined stop, limited emotional stress.
