The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 11.79 points or 0.13% to finish at 9,096.72. The S&P 500 retreated 2.56 points or 0.26% to end at 979.62. The Nasdaq Composite rose 7.62 points or 0.39% to 1,975.51.
Shares of Drugmakers finished with steep losses. Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:
) plunged 59 cents or 3.55% to $16.03.Merck & Co. (NYSE:
) tumbled 75 cents or 2.44% to $30.02.
Energy stocks finished down. Exxon Mobil (NYSE:
) lost 86 cents or 1.18% to $71.89. Chvron Corp. (NYSE:
) subtracted 51 cents or 0.74% to end at $68.34.
Shares of American Express (NYSE:
) plummeted 70 cents or 2.47% to close at $27.68. Bank of America (NYSE:
) rose 25 cents or 1.91% to $13.34. According to media reports, Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:
) is planning to reduce its 6,100-branch network by about 10 percent. Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:
) climbed 30 cents or 1.24% to $24.52.
