US stocks finished sharply lower on Monday after Lowe's Cos. weaker than expected quarterly losses aggravated doubts in the recovery's strength.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 186.06 points or 2% to finish at 9,135.34. The S&P 500 lost 24.36 points or 2.43% to end at 979.73. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 54.68points or 2.75% to 1,930.84.
Shares of Alcoa Inc. (NYSE:
), the largest US aluminum maker, sank 86 cents or 6.48% to $13.71.
Equipment maker Caterpillar Inc.(NYSE:
) plummeted $2.05 or 4.46% to close at $43.95.
Among financials, Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:
) slid 83 cents or 4.77% to $16.55. JP Morgan (NYSE:
) declined $1.72 or 4.05% to $40.73. American Express Co. (NYSE:
) plunged $1.33 or 4.19% to $30.39.
Shares of home improvement retailer Home Depot Inc. (NYSE:
) skidded $1.03 or 3.80% to close at $26.11.
DuPont Co. (NYSE:
) lost $1.30 or 4.02% to $31.06.
General Electric (NYSE:
) tumbled 55 cents or 3.95% to $13.36.
Technology stocks finished with losses. Cisco Systems Inc.
