The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 47.08 points or 0.47% to finish at 10,062.94. The S&P 500 added 4.54 points or 0.42% to end at 1,096.56. The Nasdaq Composite increased 1.06 points or 0.05% to 2,173.29.
Early on Thursday, Goldman Sachs (NYSE:
GS) reported that its third-quarter profit jumped to $3.19 billion, or $5.25 a share, from $810 million, or $1.81 a share, in the prior year quarter. Quarterly revenue increased to $12.37 billion, from $6.04 billion a year ago. Shares fell $3.65 or 1.90% to $188.63.
Shares of Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:
C) plunged 25 cents or 5% to $4.75 on Thursday reported third-quarter net income of $101 million, and a 27-cent loss per share, on revenue of $20.39 billion compared to a year-ago quarter's loss of $2.82 billion or 61 cents a share on total revenue of $16.26 billion.
Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:
BAC) plunged 49 cents or 2.64% to $18.10.
Energy stocks finished with gains. Exxon Mobil (NYSE:
XOM) rose $1.10 or 1.53% to $72.94. Chevron Corp. (NYSE:
CVX) climbed $1.23 or 1.63% to $76.69.
Shares of software giant Microsoft (NASDAQ:
MSFT) rallied 75 cents or 2.89% to $26.71.
The world's largest mobile phone maker Nokia (NYSE:
NOK) on Thursday reported a 559 million euro loss attributable to equity holders, compared to a 1.09 billion euro profit in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue plunged 20% to 9.81 billion euros. Shares of the company sank $1.71 or 11.11% to $13.68.
Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE:
HOG) soared $1.43 or 5.45% to $27.69 after it announced Thursday that its third-quarter net income dropped 84% to $26.48 million, or 11 cents a share, from $166.54 million, or 71 cents a share, in the comparable period.
