I buy good quality clothes and wear them year after year till they are no longer wearable. I update the styles with either a scarf or an accessory, much like the divas of Europe. I've included my children in my home ownership. When I pass on, they understand that the homes are to be used from generation to generation. My beach house will be enjoyed forever. I go sailing rather than use a speedboat.
I live debt free. (most Europeans do not have charge cards nor consumer debt to the heights as most Americans do) I save my money in a neighborhood bank. Doing so, empowers my local municipality in helping my fellow neighbors by investing in their mortgages, businesses and infrastructure. I take mass transit whenever possible. I prepare meals daily using local, in-season ingredients. I support the local farms, dairies and livestock establishments. I may pay a bit more, but as the cost of fuel escalates, the expense of transporting food may become cost prohibitive in the very near future. The local farmers will become lifelines and their continued economic future is vital. I frequent area businesses, such as our town coffee shop, bakery, butcher, pharmacy and eateries. I don't go to restaurants often, but I will go to our coffee shop and indulge in a cup of joe with my fellow residents. I support the local entertainment, such as our playhouse, county fairs and local musicians. I utilize my tax dollars by visiting our local library, art galleries and museums, picnicking in our parks, hiking our country trails. I attend and support local fundraisers . I donate to local charities. I subscribe to our local newspaper. I write letters-to-the editor and voice my opinion on local events.
I am involved. I'm happy. What about you?
And so it goes.
