Chief Executive Officer Ian Cook said in a statement "Given our strong momentum and excellent savings initiatives, we are comfortable with external profit expectations for the fourth quarter and full year 2008." On Thursday, Colgate climbed over 7%.
Rochester, N.Y. based Eastman Kodak (NYSE: EK) said third-quarter net income tripled to $101 million, or 35 cents a share, from $32 million, or 11 cents a share in the same quarter a year ago. Excluding one-time charges and gains, the company posted earnings of 22 cents a share, compared to 46 cents a share in the year-ago period. Sales dropped 5.1% to $2.41 billion from $2.53 billion. Analysts expected the company to earn 23 cents a share on revenue of $2.55 billion. For the entire fiscal year 2008, the company lowered its guidance. The company now expects total revenue to decline in the range of 3% - 5% from 2007 sales of $10.3 billion. Earlier it expected revenue to rise 2%. Chief Executive Antonio Perez said "We remain confident that our strategy is sound, but given today's challenging economic climate, we are taking a number of specific actions to strengthen our operations going forward". Perez added further "These include more tightly focusing our portfolio of investments, intensifying our emphasis on generating cash, and aligning our cost structure to the new economic realities." Shares of digital imaging and film company declined over 3% on Thursday.
Houston based Marathon Oil (NYSE: MRO) on Thursday said third-quarter net income rose to $2.06 billion, or $2.90 a share, from $1.02 billion, or $1.49 a share in the year-ago period. Adjusted net income rose to $2.76 a share from $1.48 a share. Total Sales rose 38% to $23.45 billion. Consensus expectations were for net income of $2.23 a share. President and CEO of Marathon Clarence P. Cazalot said "As a prudent approach to the current business environment, and as part of our ongoing capital discipline, we expect our 2009 capital program to be more than 15% lower than 2008 expenditures." Shares of the company were flat at $25.84 (+.78%) on Thursday.
