Huron Consulting Group (NASDAQ: HURN), a leading provider of financial and operational consulting services, today announced that Dr. Michael E. Whitcomb will serve as a consultant to the Company’s Higher Education practice as it strives to assist clients in the creation of new medical schools, the expansion of existing medical schools, and in managing the ongoing challenges facing medical schools and teaching hospitals.
“Since academic medical centers train our future doctors and conduct the research that improves the lives of patients, they play a huge role in determining the quality of care that is available across the country. At Huron, we are committed to helping academic medical centers function at their highest level,” said Gary E. Holdren, chairman and chief executive officer, Huron Consulting Group. “Dr. Whitcomb has led a remarkable career in academic medicine, and his understanding of clinical medicine, medical education and health policy will undoubtedly help our clients reach their academic and professional goals.”
Over the past 25 years, Dr. Whitcomb has held a number of important leadership positions in academic medicine. Early in his career, he served as associate dean for clinical affairs at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, as well as medical director of the University Hospitals. He then served as dean of the schools of medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Washington. After serving in those administrative positions, he moved to the American Medical Association where he established the division of graduate medical education and then served for 11 years as the senior vice president for medical education and director of the division of medical education at the Association of American Medical Colleges.
In recent years, he has leveraged his administrative and clinical experience by assisting universities in the establishment and expansion of medical schools. In the course of those activities, he served as a consultant to the State of Florida Board of Governors as it considered approving the establishment of new medical schools in the state and was invited on two occasions to present to the Arizona Commission on Medical Education and Research as it considered establishing a new medical school campus in Phoenix.
