The Stowe Coal IndexSM (Bloomberg ticker: COAL) gained 20.65 percent in May and gained 30.07 percent in the five months ending May 31, 2008.*†
The Index is comprised of a basket of the securities of 39 companies from around the world that are engaged in the coal industry including coal mining and related activities including transportation, the manufacture of coal mining equipment and the production of clean coal equipment manufacturing and clean coal production, and which derive more than 50% of their total revenues from such activities. The Index, launched on September 10, 2005, includes many companies of global prominence including China Coal Energy Co. Ltd., Consolidated Energy, Inc., and Bumi Resources (representing 4.3%, 7.9% and 8.0% of the Index as of May 31, 2008).
Market Vectors–Coal ETF (NYSE: KOL) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to replicate as closely as possible, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the Index. KOL generally holds all of the securities that comprise the Index in proportion to their weighting in the Index.
