Founded: Lydall's roots reach back to the early 20th century; its operations on George Street in Green Island date to Manning Paper Co. in 1846. Lydall purchased Manning in 1986.
Activities: Develops and manufactures thermal and acoustical barriers, automotive heat shields, and insulation products that offer protection from extreme temperatures. The Green Island plant produces thermal and flame barriers, and electrical insulating and cryogenic super-insulating materials. It is Lydall's oldest operating unit.

Performance: Lydall's stock underperformed both the Standard & Poor's Smallcap 600 index and the Russell 2000 index over a five-year period. A $100 investment in Lydall in December 2002 dropped to $92.69 by year-end 2007; a similar investment rose to $210.38 on the Smallcap and to $212.26 on the Russell.
Special notes: In August, Dale Barnhart was named president and CEO, succeeding David Freeman, who then retired in October. Barnhart, formerly chief executive at Synventive Molding Solutions, is paid an annual base salary of $450,000.
Market outlook
Lydall reported first-quarter net income of $3.2 million, or 19 cents a diluted share, on net sales of $94.3 million. That compares with net income of $1.3 million, or 8 cents a share, on net sales of $83.7 million in the year-ago quarter. Company officials said continuing challenges from lower automobile production and weakness in the real estate market will affect its businesses.
