Advanced Radio Technology and Mobile-WiMAX Upgradeability Promote Continued Network Expansion
Airspan Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRN), a
leading provider of WiMAX broadband wireless access networks, announced
today that wi-tribe limited Jordan has contracted for additional WiMAX
equipment to expand their network across the country.
wi-tribe limited Jordan is a subsidiary of wi-tribe, a joint venture
between The Qtel Group (Qatar Telecom) and the A.A. Turki Group of
Companies (ATCO) together with a proactive partnership with Clearwire
(NASDAQ: CLWR), originally selected Airspan as their preferred supplier in
January of 2008.
wi-tribe Jordan has deployed Airspan's 3.6-GHz HiperMAX solution which
today allows a carrier the choice of fixed or mobile WiMAX on a single
hardware platform. Airspan's HiperMAX base station with advanced radio
technologies has enabled wi-tribe to minimize the number of base stations
required for indoor coverage.
wi-tribe recently launched commercial service on their network and are now
in the expansion phase of their successful deployment. Similar to other
Airspan customers, wi-tribe is growing their HiperMAX network with the
confidence that it will be compatible with any future WiMAX roadmap.
Anders Rendahl, Airspan's Senior Vice President and General Manager of
EMEA, commented, "We're very happy to see wi-tribe's success and to be the
partner for their expansion. wi-tribe is an innovative carrier in a market
which has excellent opportunities for broadband growth."
"Emerging broadband markets are certainly one of the rapidly growing WiMAX
segments and a key target for Airspan," added Declan Byrne, Airspan's Chief
Marketing Officer. "Our WiMAX customer base includes those companies who
are pioneering broadband access in these countries. We are looking forward
to a long relationship with wi-tribe."
Airspan's HiperMAX base station provides a software-defined radio platform
for fixed and mobile WiMAX with advanced radio technologies. These
technologies significantly improve range and capacity, a key benefit to
carriers. Airspan's EasyST and ProST subscriber terminals are based on
Intel's Rosedale2 chipset which supports fixed and mobile WiMAX.
"We are pleased to partner with Airspan and provide a top notch customer
experience. Over the course of the last few weeks, we have welcomed the
residents of West Amman to be a part of the vibrant world of wi-tribe
Jordan," said CEO of wi-tribe Jordan, Dr. Bassam Hannoun.
