Start spreading the news – New York City is, hands-down, the most popular destination for the upcoming Labor Day weekend (August 30 – September 1, 2008). New York City neighborhoods and surrounding areas took a whopping 11 of 50 spots on priceline.com’s (Nasdaq: PCLN) annual list of top destinations for upcoming long weekend.

To compile its 6th annual list of the Top 50 Labor Day travel destinations, priceline.com looked at a sampling of hotel room booking requests made by priceline.com customers for the Labor Day weekend. Because the survey is based on actual booking requests, and not on consumer preference polls or votes, priceline.com believes its annual survey is one of the more accurate predictors of Labor Day travel trends.

Priceline.com also said it still has plenty of last-minute airline tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars, vacation packages, tours and attractions, and cruises available for Labor Day getaways. Visit www.priceline.com for full details. Customers who book their fall vacations by September 12 and complete their trips by November 16, 2008, can still take advantage of priceline.com’s Sunshine Guaranteed Vacation Packages promotion. Customers who book a qualifying package will receive a refund of their airfare, hotel, rental car and more if it rains more than 0.50 inches per day on half or more of the days of their vacation. See http://www.priceline.com/promo/sunshine_guarantee.asp for more details.

New York’s Times Square/Theater District is the #1 destination for the Labor Day weekend, with the city’s Chelsea area coming in at #2. Chicago’s Millennium Park and North Michigan Avenue neighborhoods, which took the top 2 spots for Labor Day 2007, come in at #7 and #9 respectively this year.

Big cities across the country are popular destinations for this Labor Day. Downtown neighborhoods, brimming with restaurants, theater, concerts and back-to-school shopping, took 11 of the 50 spots on the list. With exception of Canada, there are no international destinations on this year’s list, perhaps reflecting the current strength of the euro versus the dollar, or the relative shortness of the holiday.

There also are some surprises on this year’s list. Beach attendance is lighter than expected for the second year in a row. And Orlando, a perennial fixture on priceline.com’s Top 50 lists, is absent this Labor Day. Both results could be driven by recent storm activity in Florida and the Caribbean.
