Macy’s, Inc. (NYSE:M) store and support
divisions today announced the results of the 11th annual Partners in
Time “Bag Hunger”
summer national food campaign, benefiting many affiliates of Feeding
America, the largest domestic hunger-relief charity in the United States
(formerly known as America’s Second Harvest).
Macy’s, Inc. employees in 225 cities organized
food collections in an effort to “Bag Hunger”
for children, resulting in food and equivalent donations to provide 10.2
million pounds of food or more than 15.3 million meals.
Since 1998, company volunteers have collected food and equivalent
donations of 40.3 million pounds, or more than 62 million meals, for
hungry families nationwide.
Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America said, “This
summer was a season of unprecedented demand for emergency food and our
network of food banks was able to help feed millions of new families
through the generosity of Macy’s, Inc.
associates. We are deeply grateful to Macy's and Bloomingdale's for
their continued commitment to fight child hunger; to our knowledge they
implement the largest employee food drive in the United States.”
During the school year more than 18 million children rely on free or
reduced priced meals. During the summer months millions of
underprivileged children do not know where they will find their next
meal. More than nine million children are served by Feeding America,
more than two million aged five and under, representing nearly 13
percent of all children under age 18 in the United States and more than
72 percent of all children in poverty. Proper nutrition is vital to the
growth and development of children, particularly for low-income children.
