- Focus on Healthy High Performance Wins Praise for Supporting Healthy, Balanced Lives

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) today announced that it was named one of the 2008 Working Mother 100 Best Companies by Working Mother magazine. From flextime and telecommuting to creating a culture that supports energy and resilience, GSK is focused on helping employees live healthy and balanced lives.

'The economy is not going to alter the commitment of GSK to working mothers, because they've made family-friendly policies a part of their corporate DNA,' said Carol Evans, CEO, Working Mother Media. 'Supporting families is a vital part of their culture and not just an added benefit.'

Added Suzanne Riss, Editor in Chief, Working Mother magazine, 'GlaxoSmithKline knows that their investment pays for itself through employee loyalty and they realize that productivity depends as much on satisfied staffers as on smart processes. By helping employees manage their work/life demands, GSK is creating a highly motivated workforce.'

GlaxoSmithKline has focused on the concept of healthy high performance, noted Ann Kuhnen, Vice President, Employee Health & Performance. 'Exhausted and stressed employees run the risk of wearing themselves out and becoming less healthy and productive. Each of us has the responsibility to manage our own time and our own health. However, leading employers, such as GSK, are making that easier by designing health benefits that support balanced, healthy lives,' she said.

Earlier this year, the National Business Group on Health (NBGH), a national non-profit organization of large employers, named GSK a leader in providing a healthy workplace and promoting a healthy lifestyle for employees and their families. GSK was among 52 employers to receive the Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award at the Leadership Summit sponsored by the National Business Group on Health's Institute on the Costs and Health Effects of Obesity.

'We are so honored to be recognized by such organizations as Working Mother and NBGH,' said Ann Kuhnen. 'GlaxoSmithKline is fully committed to providing solutions for working parents to integrate professional and personal demands. By encouraging-and supporting-our employees to engage fully both at work and at home, we can help them achieve and maintain healthy high performance levels.'

Methodology:

GlaxoSmithKline was selected for the 2008 Working Mother 100 Best Companies based on an extensive application with more than 500 questions. The application included detailed questions about workforce, compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies and more. It also checked the usage, availability and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them. Seven areas were measured and scored: workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family- friendly programs, and company culture. For this year's 100 Best, particular weight was given to family-friendly policies, flexibility, leave policies and benefits for part-timers.
