Back Beat: An exhibition covering more than 178 years of policing in Newcastle opened to the public this weekend.
Memorabilia dating back to 1830 is on display at the Borough Museum and Art Gallery, Brampton Park.
The Policing The Past collection includes items donated by the former Staffordshire Police Museum.
It also includes artefacts donated by 69-year-old Alf Tunstall, from Wolstanton, who was a policeman and historian. He died last year.
His nephew, Robert Barclay, is pictured in Alf's uniform.
Delyth Copp, the borough council's museum and arts officer, said: "Along with the late Mr Tunstall's donation, the collection tells a fascinating story of Newcastle borough police force."
Items include photographs, helmets, uniforms, truncheons, handcuffs, whistles, rattles, oil lamps, beat books, cap badges, signs and a Victorian leather life-preserver.
The display runs until November.
