GROZNY. Oct 5 (Interfax) - An avenue in downtown Grozny was renamed after Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and signs reading "Prospekt Putina" appeared on the facades of its buildings after Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov decreed on Sunday to give Putin's name to Prospekt Pobedy, or Victory Avenue.
"This act is in recognition of Putin's outstanding contribution to the fight against terrorism, and to economic and social restoration in the Chechen republic," Mayor of Grozny Muslim Khuchiyev told Interfax.
Dozens of thousands of residents of Grozny and other parts of Chechnya have gathered on Akhmat Kadyrov Square, where Putin Avenue begins. Following a flower-laying ceremony at a monument to the assassinated former Chechen President Akhmat Kadyrov, to be attended by Chechen leaders and officials of the Southern Federal District and North Caucasus regions, the Chechen president will cut a red ribbon to inaugurate the new avenue.
The participants in the ceremony will then walk the whole way along Putin Avenue to a theater and concert hall, where a concert will be given to mark 420 years since good-neighborly relations were established between Chechnya and Russia.
Kadyrov will give a reception honoring the event in the evening.
