Sharpie Fine Retractable 10-Count Marker Pack Receives a Sustainable
Makeover: 60% Plastic Reduction
Global packaging solutions leader MeadWestvaco
Corporation (NYSE:MWV) announced that it has begun to supply Newell
Rubbermaid Office Products, a worldwide leader in the manufacturing
and marketing of writing instruments, art products and office
organization, Natralock® paperboard based
security packaging for their Sharpie® Fine
Retractable 10-count marker pack in club stores. Newell Rubbermaid
Office Products selected MWV’s Natralock to
replace their previously used mock-clamshell packaging after
improvements on sustainability measures were demonstrated.
“MWV was great to work with from the start –
very responsive to package design ideas and proactive in providing
design parameters,” says Randy Canlas,
packaging leader – markers (Sharpie, Sharpie
Accent®, EXPO® Dry
Erase). “With strong sustainability features,
product security, curl-resistance and graphics capabilities, Natralock
packaging is a perfect fit for the Sharpie club pack. The new product
packaging resulted in a 60 percent reduction in plastic used, which was
attractive from an environmental perspective.”
“We’re extremely
pleased to partner with Newell Rubbermaid Office Products to provide a
security packaging solution that not only addresses their sustainability
goals but also helps strengthen their brand in the club store market,”
says Jeff Kellogg, vice president, MWV Natralock security packaging. “The
added benefit of considerable plastic reduction inherent in using
Natralock contributes to an improvement in major retailers’
packaging scorecard parameters.”
Natralock paperboard-based security paperboard packaging is made from a
renewable resource, and is recyclable, and uses 50 to 60 percent less
plastic on average than traditional PVC clamshells. Because of the high
quality and printability of the paperboard, brand owners can achieve
bolder graphics and improve the consumer's experience without
compromising security, durability or visibility. Natralock security
packaging features a proprietary tamper- and tear-resistant paperboard
that can be more efficiently RF-sealed, with approximately one-third the
energy required for plastic clamshells, or heat-sealed on most existing
equipment. Consumers prefer Natralock packaging’s
safer opening and improved shopping experience compared to often
injurious struggles with sharp-edged plastic clamshells.
