Oct. 13--Dell's Inspiron 1525 is an excellent mainstream choice for basic computing, especially because the direct-from-Dell version is highly flexible, offering extensive configuration options. The Dell 1525 is never going to be mistaken for a high-end laptop. Its plastic construction and spartan design point to a philosophy of commoditization, acknowledging that in this price range, providing the best value is paramount.
The good: Includes HDMI output and touch-sensitive media control buttons.
The bad: Intel Pentium Dual-Core, rather than a Core 2 Duo CPU; unimpressive battery life.
The bottom line: The Dell Inspiron 1525-139B is a classic mid-size, mainstream laptop, but this specific retail-only configuration has a wimpier battery than its predecessor.
