Newsweek to Launch Turkish-Language Edition

Licensing Agreement Signed with Ciner Media Holding


NEW YORK, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Newsweek plans to launch 'NewsweekTurkey,' its eighth non-English language edition. This new edition will bepublished in collaboration with Ciner Gazete Dergi Basim Yayincilik San. veTic A.S., Newsweek CEO Tom Ascheim and Ciner Media Group President KenanTekdag announced.


Newsweek Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company,and the Ciner Group companies, recently signed the Newsweek licensingagreement.


'We are delighted to be joining with Ciner to launch a high-qualitynewsmagazine for today's Turkish audience,' Ascheim said. 'We welcome theopportunity to expand our foreign-language editions into Turkey. We areexcited that the launch of Newsweek Turkey is now getting close to reality.'The launch was originally scheduled for 2007, but was delayed.


The weekly magazine will have its own staff of top Turkish reporters andeditors and will cover the most significant developments in Turkey and theworld. Selcuk Tepeli will be the editor of the magazine. 'The first issue isexpected to hit newsstands this autumn,' said Mehmet Erden Demirel, Presidentof Ciner Magazine Group. He added, 'Newsweek Turkey will be the first licensedinternational news magazine in Turkey and will play a lead role and adddifferent interpretations in describing and analyzing Turkey's politics andeconomy while maintaining Newsweek's editorial independency principles andquality editorial standards.'


'I and my editorial team feel honored that we will have the chance to bepart of the world's most prestigious news magazine,' Tepeli said. 'NewsweekTurkey will be able to draw upon both its own editorial staff and Newsweek'sinternational network of correspondents as it looks for the human storiesbehind the news, bringing a fresh perspective to its Turkish audience.'


Circulation is expected to be 50.000, and will be distributed throughoutTurkey. Advertising will be sold by Ciner Magazine Group itself in Turkey andNewsweek International will sell ads elsewhere. A one-page color ad isexpected to be priced (including agency commissions) at 38.000TL (30.000 US$).The Ciner Group is a major presence in Turkey, where, in addition to itspublishing interests, it has more than 30 companies operating in commerce,industry, services, energy, mining and media.
