Red Hat Enterprise Linux Selected for Reliability, High Performance, Support and Opportunity for Reduced TCO

Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that the Italian Ministry of Justice has selected Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the platform for its web-based Civil Justice applications, including those used for general cognizance, for civil execution and for the offices of the Small Claims courts. Applications based on Red Hat’s flagship platform, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, are installed at the district level and used throughout all judicial offices operated by the Italian Ministry of Justice.

The single guiding principle of these applications lies in the Processo Civile Telematico (PCT), or On-line Civil Trial, a software infrastructure which allows electronic management of all the activities connected to the civil process, whether initiated externally by lawyers or other public/administrative bodies, or internally by magistrates and registrars.

Maximum reliability and high performance, combined with the opportunity to reduce the total cost of ownership of information technology infrastructures, are the fundamental requirements for a computer platform which operates in an institutional environment, explains the IT General Manager of the Ministry of Justice. Choosing Red Hat Enterprise Linux has allowed a positive response to the invitation to use open source software, at the same time providing high-level support, as the services offered by the Ministry are mission-critical.

The Ministry of Justice constitutes the driving force of government judicial policy and, apart from handling judicial organization of both personnel and services, it also supplies all the tools necessary for accomplishing administrative functions directly connected to juridical matters in both the civil and criminal fields. This includes management of notarial archives, monitoring professional associations and boards, the administration of criminal records, international co-operation in civil and criminal matters and preliminary investigation of requests for pardon proposed to the President of the Republic.

“It is an honor for Red Hat Italia to welcome the Ministry of Justice as one of our clients,” said Gianni Anguilletti, country sales manager of Red Hat Italia. “The public administration market has always been one of our benchmarks and this latest success shows how our solutions are appreciated in this environment more than ever, because of their performance and reliability.”
