TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- Taiwan's Siliconware Precision Industries Co. (NASDAQ-NMS:SPIL) (SPIL) said Thursday U.S.-based Tessera Inc. (TSRA) filed a complaint against SPIL and its U.S. unit Siliconware USA Inc., charging patent infringement.

San Jose, Calif.-based Tessera filed the complaint to the U.S. International Trade Commission, and the commission has declared a patent violation investigation, SPIL said in a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

SPIL, Taiwan's second-largest chip packaging and testing firm by revenue after Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (NYSE:ASX) (ASX), said it has retained U.S. lawyers to represent the company.

According to a regulatory filing by the U.S. International Trade Commission, the respondents in Tessera's complaint also include Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, the world's largest chip packaging and testing firm by revenue, and its U.S. unit.

The other respondents include Taiwan's ChipMOS Technologies Bermuda Ltd. (NASDAQ-NMS:IMOS) ( IMOS), and Singapore-based STATS ChipPAC Ltd. (Singapore:S24) (S24.SG).
