Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY) today announced it has been named to the
Dow Jones Sustainability Index that tracks North American companies in
terms of their economic, environmental and social performance.
Weyerhaeuser is the only North American company named in the category of
forestry and paper products.
The DJSI follows a best-in-class approach and includes sustainability
leaders from each industry. The annual review is based on a thorough
assessment of corporate economic, environmental and social performance,
covering issues such as corporate governance, risk management, labor
practices, climate change and supply chain standards. The DJSI results
are available to asset managers around the world for a variety of
sustainability-driven investment portfolios.
“As people around the world focus on climate
change, Weyerhaeuser has an important role to play,”
said Dan Fulton, president and chief executive officer. “Our
expertise in managing forests puts us in a unique position to find
sustainable solutions for people and the planet. Trees and wood products
store carbon. We use science and technology to protect the environment
while creating the products customers demand.”
Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the market
performance of sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Companies are
invited to participate in the review process, and the selection of index
companies is based on an assessment of general and industry-specific
criteria.
“We’re proud to
again be a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index,”
Fulton said. “Third-party validation of our
sustainability practices is confirmation for our customers, employees,
communities and shareholders that we are doing the right thing. In our
operations, we are continuing to reduce our direct greenhouse gas
emissions to meet our commitment of a 40 percent reduction by 2020 using
a 2000 baseline.”
