Oct. 7--The Charlotte 49ers men's basketball team landed one of the nation's top prep power forwards on Monday, setting the foundation for strong frontcourt in the 2009-10 season.
Chris Braswell, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward who attends Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., committed to the 49ers following an official visit to the Charlotte campus, his AAU coach Keith Stevens confirmed.
"Chris felt there was a good opportunity at Charlotte to build a good relationship with the coaching staff. Secondly, he liked the way Charlotte allows its power forwards to utilize their versatility," Stevens said.
"His mom and grandmother were also impressed after meeting with members of the administration in learning of all the resources available to help him be successful academically."
Stevens said Braswell had offers from Xavier, Indiana, Maryland and Virginia Tech. Braswell plans to sign a national letter of intent during next month's early signing period.
Braswell is ranked the 78th best player in the country among high school seniors and the 22nd-best power forward by recruiting Web site Rivals.com.
Last season, Braswell made a commitment to Georgetown, but after deciding to spend another season in prep school the Baltimore native re-opened his recruiting in June.
Braswell joins West Rowan High's K.J. Sherrill -- a 6-7, 220-pound forward in next year's class. Boston College transfer Shamari Spears, a 6-6, 235-pound forward, will also be eligible next season.
