Oct. 31--The weak economy, a nearly two-month strike at The Boeing Co. and a reorganization have led to at least 95 layoffs at the Barnes Group during October, 30 of them in Connecticut, the company said Thursday.

The cuts, which the company said were mostly complete, amount to about 2 percent of the Bristol company's global workforce and 4 percent of its Connecticut jobs.

The cuts affect both hourly and salaried workers, mostly in its former aerospace segment.

Barnes, an aerospace and industrial parts manufacturer and distributor, announced a week ago that it had collapsed its three main divisions into two, dismantling its standalone, Windsor-based aerospace segment and redistributing its functions.

Barnes did not disclose layoffs then but said it was trying to "eliminate organization redundancies."

Barnes spokesman Brian D. Koppy said Thursday that most of the layoffs, including about 20 at the company's Windsor jet engine parts factory, were attributable to "general economic conditions" and a lull in business caused by the Boeing strike, which has lasted more than 50 days.

Boeing's Machinists are expected to approve a deal within days and return to work. Barnes makes components for jet engines used on most Boeing aircraft, including the 777 and the delayed 787 Dreamliner.

Barnes also eliminated jobs at operations in Ogden, Utah, and West Chester, Ohio.

Koppy was not certain how many of the layoffs were directly related to the recent reorganization, in which aerospace operations were redistributed to the new Precision Components and Logistics and Manufacturing Services segments.

The components segment, which supplies parts for the aerospace, transportation, energy and electronics industries, is now based in Farmington and Bristol and includes the business once known as Associated Spring.

The logistics and manufacturing segment, which makes and delivers spare aerospace parts and other industrial supplies, is based in Cleveland. Both segments have their headquarters in Bristol, Koppy said.
