(Source: Datamonitor)trackingOrigin Energy has announced that the first gas turbine was installed at its Darling Downs power station site near Dalby in southern Queensland, Australia, marking the commencement of the next phase of construction on the A$780 million project.

The Darling Downs power station will generate 630MW of electricity into the grid, providing power to Queensland homes and businesses.

The power station will be air-cooled using 200 million liters of water a year, which is around 2% to 3% of the water used by a typical water-cooled coal-fired power station. The gas will be supplied from Origin's coal seam gas fields in Queensland.

Paul Farnworth, project director for the Darling Downs power station, said that the construction work is on track for commercial operations to begin in the first quarter of 2010.

Mr Farnworth said: "This will be our largest power station and the largest combined cycle power station in Australia. It was a challenging job to move the 200-tonne turbine from the Port of Brisbane to the site over the Toowoomba Range, particularly with recent localized flooding restricting our vehicle movements."
