Tokyo, Nov. 7 (Jiji Press)--The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Friday that it has received five applications for participation in a domestic carbon credit system for facilitating greenhouse gas emission cuts.
Under the system, large companies will be awarded emission credits if they succeed in projects to help smaller firms and other entities reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.
The credit system is part of the country's domestic emission trading system, whose test operations started in October.
One of the five projects calls for installing lighting equipment with less power consumption at University of Tokyo buildings with the support from major convenience store operator Lawson Inc. . Lawson will also help the university introduce energy-efficient water coolers and heaters at its hospital.
Among the three other projects, a canned food producer in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, will introduce eco-friendly boilers in cooperation with Shizuoka Gas Co. .
A hospital in Masuda, Shimane Prefecture, western Japan, will procure energy-efficient heat pump systems and lighting equipment with the help from Chugoku Electric Power Co. .
Tokyo Electric Power Co. will help introduce heat pump systems at a spa in Yamanashi Prefecture, west of Tokyo.
The total amount of annual CO2 emissions to be reduced through the five projects is estimated at 4,964 tons.END
