Dec. 4--Country musician Kevin Fowler can't stop singing.
In the middle of an interview, he's likely to break out into one of his hits just to demonstrate what he's talking about. Fortunately for his fans, he won't stop singing on the road, either.
With more than 150 shows this year, Fowler's been touring hard to promote his 2007 record, Bring It On, and build up momentum for a new release next year. And he tours because, well, that's just what he does.
Fowler will play the Texas Hall of Fame at 10 p.m. Friday (tickets are $15).
Spotlight spoke to Fowler this week about his music, his philosophy, drinking beer and his latest single, Cheaper to Keep Her.
Christian Schmidt: Was that you playing for the Texans game on Monday Night Football?
Kevin Fowler: Yeah, we played before the game and then at halftime. Just launched into 100% Texan [from 2000's Beer, Bait & Ammo] for the crowd. There were 65,000 people out there, and that's huge.
CS: Do you like playing in Bryan-College Station?
KF: Yeah. Those Aggies are a rowdy crowd, and the rowdier the better for me. It's always a good time over there. People in the Brazos Valley like their honky-tonking.
CS: How do you describe your music to people who haven't heard it before?
KF: It's just beer-drinking, good-time country music, is what I usually say. Me and [country singer] Mark Chesnutt are buddies, and we always talk about how to describe it, and we came up with "boogie-nosed country music."
I'm not sure I know what that means, but it's just snot-nosed, edgy music, and that's the best way to describe it. It's just good beer-drinking music.
CS: Tell me about the latest single, Cheaper to Keep Her.
KF: We released it a few weeks ago, and it's just now getting its legs. It's kind of a return to the old style of stuff, the Don't Touch My Willie [from 2004's Loose, Loud & Crazy] sort of stuff.
Best Mistake I've Ever Made was the big ballad, so this is kind of a return to the stuff I'm known for, the silly stuff. That's kind of my schtick. I don't take life too seriously, and it's the same way with music. You can't take it too seriously.
It's a funny song about divorce. That's such a terrible thing, divorce, that you have to laugh about it.
CS: Is there a personal story behind the song?
KF: No, I've never been divorced. Not yet [Fowler laughs].
I wrote it with Thom Shepherd, a buddy of mine. He's written hits for a lot of people, like Redneck Yacht Club for Craig Morgan. He writes a lot of silly songs.
