Jan. 17--Julia Marshall was crushed when she learned that the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft store in Fredericksburg was moving to Cosner's Corner.

The Stafford County artist and self-confessed "fabric-holic" makes cloth dolls and quilts, and doesn't want to drive to the Massaponax big-box center to buy material.

"HELP!! We need to be able to buy fabric right here at home in Stafford," she wrote in her e-mailed submission to The Free Lance-Star's annual Wish List of retailers and restaurants that readers say they'd like to see here.

Marshall, a member of Friend to Friend Quilters, was one of several Stafford residents who said they'd like to see a fabric store open in their county -- along with a number of other businesses, including the No. 1-ranked Trader Joe's, a Tuesday Morning, higher-end clothing stores and The Container Store.

This is the first time since the Wish List began six years ago that readers have made county-specific requests.

Becky Hubbard, for example, put in a plug for opening a G Street Fabrics & Home Decorating Center in Stafford.

"They closed the outlet at Potomac Mills, but they could open a smaller store here and I truly believe it would prosper," she wrote. "Wal-Mart is going to be phasing out their fabric department and Hancock is on the long list of soon-to-go-bankrupt. That leaves Jo-Ann's, which is opening a new huge store in Massaponax in February, but it's definitely not centrally located."

Meanwhile Richard and Lynne Charles said they feel Cosner's Corner is in desperate need of a bookstore.

"The closest bookstore is on [State] Route 3, and no one wants to go to Route 3 these days," they wrote in an e-mail.

"With the hospital under construction and Wal-Mart and Target right here, a bookstore would be awesome," they said. "It will also be a great help with five high schools in Spotsylvania, three of which are on this end of the county, and the Germanna Community College [campus] in the immediate area."

Beth Jenkins said she'd like to see a grocery store, any grocery store, open in the old, "sorely missed" Fredericksburg Hardware building on William Street.

"Townies would never have to get in the car again," she wrote.

Mostly, however, this year's Wish List looks remarkably similar to ones past. Nine of the 35 letters and e-mails asked for a Trader Joe's, eight asked for a Stein Mart and seven wanted a Whole Foods. All have been at or near the top in previous years.

Cynthia Kissler wrote that she loves Trader Joe's because of its high-quality organic and natural foods. "We have been to many cities in the U.S.
