Jan. 19--A Manheim Township motel might be razed to make way for a small shopping center featuring a Giant to Go convenience store and other businesses.
The Quality Inn at Oregon Pike and Landis Valley Road, built 50 years ago, will be demolished for The Shoppes at Landis Valley if plans for the complex are approved by Manheim Township.
Sources familiar with the project said the Giant to Go would be joined by two other free-standing stores along Oregon Pike -- a bank and a drug store. Behind them would be a strip of stores.
The size and cost of the project were not immediately available. Officials with developer LMS Commercial Real Estate could not be reached for comment by presstime.
The Giant to Go would be the second convenience store here developed by Giant Food Stores, which also operates eight supermarkets in the county.
Its first convenience store, at Fruitville Pike and Petersburg Road, is nearing completion and set to open in the early part of this year.
Giant spokeswoman Tracy Pawelski today called the c-stores "a natural extension" of the company's success with selling gasoline at 64 of its 148 supermarkets.
Of its Lancaster County supermarkets, only the Elizabethtown location has gas pumps.
The Oregon Pike store, like its first convenience store, would be about 4,000 square feet and open seven days a week, although its hours and the size of its work force remain to be determined.
Pawelski declined to disclose the cost of the stores.
The two convenience stores here are the only ones under development by Giant in its four-state territory for now, said Pawelski.
An official with the Quality Inn could not be reached for comment by presstime.
According to newspaper files, the motel was built in 1959 as the Landis Valley Resort Inn, with 51 rooms.
