(Source: Datamonitor)trackingDepartment store chain Fortnum & Mason, which employs 530 people, has announced plans to cut approximately 10% of its workforce due to the difficult trading conditions.

Up to 55 employees are expected to lose their jobs, revealed the Daily Mail. The retailer is to enter into a consultation period with its staff from February 5, 2009, said Retail Week.

The Daily Mail has quoted Beverley Aspinall, managing director of Fortnum & Mason, as saying: "January so far is ok and has been buoyed by the tourist market, but we think the underlying figures in 2009 will be very, very tough. So we are taking action now in anticipation of it being very difficult this year."
