The Dallas Morning News Robert Miller Column: United Way of Dallas Beats Its Fundraising Goal

Feb. 23--The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas will announce that it has exceeded its 2008-09 campaign goal of $58.3 million at the Heroes of Hope event Tuesday at Hotel Adolphus, said Kent Eastman, campaign chairman and area president of Capital One Bank.

"In the face of a very difficult economic environment, everyone in the metropolitan Dallas community can be proud" of that accomplishment, he said.

"This investment will help United Way respond to community needs during these critical times. In just the past six months, the demand for basic services has increased 20 to 40 percent among United Way's community partners."

The Heroes of Hope include:

--D. Roger Nanney, vice chairman of Deloitte LLP, will receive the J. Erik Jonsson Award for Volunteerism, the group's highest honor. Nanney is a longtime United Way volunteer who was the 2004-05 campaign chairman and the 2007-08 chairman of the board.

--Jamie Wyatt-Upson, chief executive of ReadyStart, will get the Agency Executive of the Year Award.

--Celanese Corp. will get the Spirit of Caring Award.

--Kimberly-Clark Corp., Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP, Exxon Mobil Corp., and Deloitte will be honored for the Highest Employee Giving Per Capita.

--Kimberly-Clark, Holt Cat, Exxon Mobil and the Energy Future Holdings Family of Companies (Luminant, Oncor and TXU Energy) had the Highest Corporate Giving Per Capita.

--New Campaign of the Year, or the company with the largest campaign increase, was Securus Technologies Inc.

--The Outstanding Use of United Way Best Practices honorees are McLane Foodservice Inc., Holt Cat, Exxon Mobil, Medical Center of Plano and Atmos Energy Corp.

--Outstanding Campaign Growth Awards will go to Fluor Corp., Holt Cat, Celanese and AT&T/CWA 6215.

--Leadership Giving Awards will go to Regions Bank, BancTec, Exxon Mobil, Energy Future Holdings Family of Companies.

--Vinson & Elkins LLP, Celanese and AT&T/CWA 6215 will receive Tocqueville Giving Awards.

--Million-Dollar Campaigns include AT&T/CWA 6215, Bank of America, Citi, Deloitte, Exxon Mobil, Frito-Lay Inc., IBM Corp., J.C. Penney, Microsoft, Texas Health Resources, Energy Future Holdings Family of Companies, Texas Instruments Inc. and UPS-Southwest Region and North Texas District.

--Ross Wortham of the Child & Family Guidance Center will be named Agency Speaker of the Year.

--The Child & Family Guidance Center Agency is Campaign Partner of the Year.

Clint McDonnough of Ernst & Young LLP will be the 2009-10 campaign chairman.
