Feb. 26--MEMPHIS -- Along with a 9 percent tuition increase, UTC Chancellor Roger Brown is proposing three student fee increases for next fall.

Dr. Brown wants the student recreation wellness center fee to increase to $25 per year, which would generate $400,000 for the university. The fee would help to fund wellness center jobs, he said.

He also said he wants to implement a $30 fee per semester hour for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's five-semester nursing program, money that would be used for equipment and could generate $52,650. In addition, he would implement a $25 engineering lab fee per credit hour to help the college replace lab equipment.

In reviewing the list of 20 academic programs being considered for elimination, Charlie Wharton, who sits on the UT board of trustees, said UTC should look at cutting its engineering majors.

Mr. Wharton said that, in all the years he has been going to UTC graduations, he has only seen three UTC students graduate in electrical engineering.

In response, Dr. Brown said that new businesses coming to the area such as Volkswagen will increase the need for engineering majors, but Mr. Wharton disagreed.

"Unless we see a major increase, I think you guys have to look hard at that," Mr. Wharton said. "I know there is a demand for engineers, they just don't stay in Chattanooga."

In other news, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville will cut 8 percent from its academic units, and eliminate 326 positions, 204 of which are currently filled.
