NYTimes.com launched today The
Choice (http://www.nytimes.com/thechoice),
a new blog dedicated to demystifying the college admissions process with
insights, analysis and expertise from Jacques Steinberg, a national
education reporter for The New York Times and author of “The
Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College”
(Viking/Penguin), a New York Times best-seller.
“For high-school seniors and their families, this promises to be an
April unlike any other," Mr. Steinberg writes in his introductory post
on the blog. “Many applicants are grappling with being thousands of
dollars short in what they hoped to have on hand to pay for their
college educations. The choice of which college to attend could well
hinge on an applicant’s ability to find additional resources."
“Through this blog, my New York Times colleagues and I hope to serve as
a regular online companion and resource to those of you running this
gantlet," he added.
The
Choice examines all the aspects of getting into college and paying
for it, from the application process to the acceptance and waiting list
period to financial aid and loan procedures. It is a one-stop
destination for students, parents, guidance counselors and admissions
officers to access authoritative news and information that they can use
when navigating this complicated process.
In addition to original reporting from Mr. Steinberg and other Times
journalists, The
Choice features:
-
Letters and comments from students and parents about their own
experiences during the admissions process;
-
Discussion forums for students, parents, guidance counselors and
admissions professionals;
-
Panels of experts on subjects such as financial aid and waiting lists;
and
-
Access to past Times articles on related educational subjects.
Mr. Steinberg has been a staff reporter for The New York Times since
1990. He has covered national stories, education issues and most
recently network television news.
Mr. Steinberg’s book, “The Gatekeepers,” was the result of a front page
series he wrote for The Times. In 1997, he was the recipient of the
Education Writers Association’s top award, The Fred M. Hechinger Grand
Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting, for “Room 2-223” a series
on a third-grade classroom.
According to Nielsen Online, NYTimes.com had 20.1 million unique
