Unilever first-quarter net profit falls 45 percent

(Source: Associated Press/AP Online)trackingAMSTERDAM - Unilever NV, the maker of consumer products such as Dove soaps and Ben & Jerry's ice cream, has reported a 45 percent fall in net profit for the first quarter, as sales dipped and restructuring costs increased.

The company says net profit was euro731 million, down from euro1.34 billion. Last year's figures were boosted by euro517 million in one-time gains, mostly from selling its Boursin cheese arm. Company sales fell 1 percent to euro9.51 billion.

Unilever said in its report Thursday that "underlying" sales - a nonstandard measure that strips out the impact of currency changes and operations that have been sold - would have risen 4.8 percent, due entirely to price increases.
