May 21--Two men captured on bank surveillance tapes trying to use a bank card belonging to a missing Charlotte woman are "subjects of interest" in the case, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Wednesday.

Nikki McPhatter, 30, a US Airways ticket agent who lives in northwest Charlotte, was last seen May4 at work. She hasn't been heard from since calling a friend May6 in Columbia and saying she was out of gas.

The friend told police McPhatter didn't answer her phone a short time later.

Between 6:45 and 7p.m. that day, a camera at the Wachovia bank branch on Farrow Road in Columbia got footage of the two men. The video shows one of the men walking away from a drive-up teller machine and getting into a car. Bank records show that was the same time someone unsuccessfully tried using the woman's card at the bank.

"Obviously, we still have a lot of questions in this case," said Capt. Pete Davis, of CMPD's Special Victims Unit.

During a news conference Wednesday, police described a search that has focused on Charlotte and Columbia.

While McPhatter's last known contact with others was May6, police said her black Honda -- with the N.C. license tag "PHATTAH" -- has been reported being spotted several times in the Charlotte area during recent days.

Davis said police have been working with their counterparts in Columbia, but they also are questioning friends and family in Charlotte. They also searched McPhatter's home Wednesday and confiscated two computers. Detectives declined to say if they had learned anything from the contents of the computers.

"We're trying to get information from as many sources as possible," Detective Ron Flagg said.

Reports of McPhatter's car being spotted in the Charlotte area have been perplexing.

"We have received numerous tips, with descriptions of several different people operating the vehicle," Flagg said. "We don't know why it is being reported seen in so many different places."

McPhatter is African American, 5-foot-5 and 150 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes and was driving a black 2003 Honda Accord.
