Jun. 4--It might be time for the mayor to proclaim this "Dumb bank robber week" in the city of Daytona Beach.
Earlier this week two men were arrested after there get-away vehicle ran out of gas
The suspect in a robbery this morning at the Wachovia Bank, 441 Seabreeze Blvd., was about to run out of gas. He hired a cab to take him to the bank.
Daniel William Vigil, 51, of Jacksonville, who faces a charge of bank robbery from this morning's incident and also was arrested on a Jacksonville warrant charging him with bank robbery there, took a cab from a restaurant on International Speedway Boulevard and told the driver he wanted to go to a beachside hotel but need to stop at the bank first, Daytona Beach police Investigator Jimmie Flynt said.
He entered the bank about 10:50 a.m. and handed a plastic bag to a teller, telling her to put money in it, Flynt said. He certainly wasn't greedy. The teller was still filling the bag with money when the man said "that's enough," took the bag and returned to his cab.
The cab was still in the bank parking lot when Vigil began removing the money from the bag and a dye pack exploded, Flynt said. Realizing the man was a bank robber, the driver ordered him out of his cab and he fled on foot.
Officer J. T. Thomas confronted the man as he came from between two houses and the man reached behind him and then swung around and pointed his hands at the officer as if he was aiming a weapon. Police believe he may have been attempting "suicide by cop," but rather than fire his gun, Thomas pointed the obvious to Vigil, telling he didn't have anything in his hands.
Vigil was caught after a short chase and the money was recovered, Flynt said.
