TULSA, Okla., June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The mayor of Charlotte, N.C., Patrick McCrory, will open the Keynote Session of the 9th annual COAL-GEN conference and exhibition to be held August 19-21 at the Charlotte Convention Center. Mayor McCrory will welcome the estimated 4,500 attendees to COAL-GEN, being held for the first time in Charlotte and hosted by Charlotte-based Duke Energy.
COAL-GEN, which is owned and managed by PennWell Corp., is the largest conference and exhibition for the coal-fired power generation industry in the world. The show annually draws power industry professionals, public and private electric utilities, consultants, government officials, regulators, scientists and researchers from the U.S. and around the world. This year, COAL-GEN will also welcome some 350 industry exhibitors.
COAL-GEN 2009's keynote session, beginning at 10 A.M. on Wednesday, August 19th, will also feature Frederick Buckman, President of the Power Group for The Shaw Group (also based in Charlotte); James L. Turner, Group Executive Vice President and CEO of U.S. franchised electric and gas for Duke Energy; Gary A. Brown, Chairman of the New York State Public Service Commission; and G. Lee Lushbaugh, president of Fossil Power, Bechtel Corp.
In addition to offering dozens of technical sessions covering every aspect of coal-fired power generation, COAL-GEN will provide two mega-sessions and two special lunch-time, exhibit floor briefings addressing some of the biggest issues in the coal-fired power sector. One of the briefings will focus on carbon legislation initiatives. The other will review what the Obama economic stimulus package offers to the coal-fired sector.
Mega-sessions held on the last day of the conference - Friday, August 21 - will provide an overview of carbon sequestration projects currently underway in the United States, and how coal- fired generation will continue to provide a significant share of the electric generation mix.
