Leading network vendor 3Com wins tender
3Com
Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) has won a public tender to provide the
ÖBB Group with networking technology for the future. The ÖBB Group is
Austria's largest rail carrier with 1,500 locations, 42,000 employees
and a turnover of 5.8 billion euros. In the next two years, the Group
will renew two thirds of its LANs in order to be prepared for future
technologies. In doing so, ÖBB will move company-wide to the modular
enterprise 3Com®
Switch 5500 in its main locations and 3Com
OfficeConnect® managed switches and IntelliJack®
switches in the smaller locations.
ÖBB has already laid the foundation for a fail-safe, scalable network
infrastructure by installing an IP network across all its sites over the
last 15 years. Since then, the communications infrastructure has been
regularly upgraded with 3Com products to ensure full support for ÖBB’s
innovative business strategy. The ÖBB Group was the first company to
provide services such as cable-based and wireless Internet access,
office and B2B communications for passenger transport and courier
services. Remotely controlled signaling also runs over the 3Com network
to ensure the secure operation of trains and passenger information
systems.
ÖBB’s positive experience of the scalability and the cross-generational
compatibility of 3Com devices was a decisive factor in choosing 3Com
again for the new network. As well as a very good price/performance
ratio and easy network management, it was critical that the solution
accommodated the latest technology trends and was based on open
standards.
“The ÖBB Group now has a sustainable infrastructure for its LAN
strategy,” said Ron Sege, president and COO, 3Com. “In addition, the
network is designed to significantly reduce operational costs and
significantly increase the performance of the network.”
