- Medco expands Indiana pharmacy to include 'Oncology Therapeutic Resource Center'
- Center will train pharmacists to specialize in personalized care for cancer patients
WHITESTOWN, Ind., June 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Medco Health Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MHS), joined by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, announced that its automated pharmacy being built at AllPoints at Anson will house the Medco Therapeutic Resource Center(R) (TRC) for oncology patients - adding an additional 162 professional pharmacy positions to the area. This expansion will bring the total number of pharmacy jobs, including pharmacists, researchers, pharmacy technicians, engineering technologists, and administrative positions, to more than 1,400.
Medco's TRCs focus on the specialized treatment of patients with chronic and complex conditions. Nearly half of the company's 2,600 pharmacists are specialists deployed across the TRCs where they provide disease-specific therapy management for those patients who account for 96 percent of pharmacy spending and 75 percent of this country's medical costs.
'With condition-specific TRCs throughout the country, Medco has established a new paradigm in care management that elevates the role of the pharmacist and has already proven to efficiently identify and close clinical gaps in care. This partnering of pharmacy with physicians improves health outcomes and lowers overall health care costs,' said Kenneth O. Klepper, Medco president and chief operating officer. 'The oncology TRC in Indiana will be home to specialist pharmacists who will work with physicians nationwide as they treat the more than one million Medco members living with this condition.'
Medco's Oncology TRC will be operational by October 2009. The pharmacy, including the addition of the TRC and a world-class personalized medicine research center, will encompass a total 452,000 square feet at the AllPoints at Anson site.
'Indiana's climb as a center of life sciences leadership just advanced another rung,' said Governor Mitch Daniels. 'In total payroll dollars, Medco was already the biggest new company recruitment the state has seen, and this expansion will add tens of millions more dollars to our economy. What fabulous news.'
