ABOUT THE “BIKE IN STYLE” CHALLENGE

The global leader in luxury with a long-standing commitment to the environment, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton wants to be at the forefront of the green revolution underway in New York City. This is consistent with the Group’s philosophy, as stated by its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bernard Arnault: “Tradition cannot be separated from innovation, nor nature from creation.”

As part of this commitment, LVMH Inc. Chairman Renaud Dutreil proposed to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, the City’s Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) the creation of the “Bike in Style Challenge.” In this Challenge, FIT students competed to design stylish bike-wear and accessories for New Yorkers who bike to work, in support of Mayor Bloomberg’s work to promote environmentally friendly and healthy bicycle commuting in New York City.

The DKNY division of LVMH-owned Donna Karan International (DKI) executed the Challenge with FIT. Specifically, DKNY worked closely with the students to provide creative direction as they competed in designing a set of biking essentials: a poncho, a jacket and a travel bag. DKNY is also developing the prototypes of the winning designs.

Seven judges evaluated a series of materials submitted by the competing students and chose the winning designs. They are: Renaud Dutreil of LVMH; Donna Karan; Hilary Duff; NYC First Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris; DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan; Valerie Steele of The Museum at FIT; and Andy Darrell of the Environmental Defense Fund.

Prototypes of the winning designs will be unveiled this summer, in conjunction with the City’s annual “Summer Streets.”

Summer Streets 2009

Summer Streets is a series of three August Saturdays on which Park Avenue and connecting streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park are closed to motor vehicles. LVMH is the main sponsor of this New York City DOT event.

Renaud Dutreil said, “We are proud to be a corporate supporter of Summer Streets, as it reflects a core LVMH philosophy. As the leader in luxury, we are committed not only to offering creativity and innovation through our brands, but also to improving the quality of life for people around the world, especially in large cities like New York, through programs that offer exciting choices and have a truly beneficial impact.”
