Red Laser Diodes Enable a Smaller Footprint for Outdoor Equipment Applications

Opnext, Inc., a global leader in the design and manufacturing of optical modules, components and subsystems, today introduced significant upgrades to the company’s red laser diodes offering, resulting in higher temperature operation red laser diodes for use in industrial and medical sensor light sources and measurement equipment.

Laser diodes are ideal for digital information applications and for use in the fiber optic communications field, offering features including single wavelength lasing, directivity and a small size. Opnext’s new red laser diodes are suitable for applications in laser levelers, distance meters, optical fiber checkers, as well as positioning sensors such as chip mounters.

“Our latest red laser diode is especially suited for applications with environmental restrictions due to temperature, such as coolers. Previously systems which may have had to use thermal management methodologies, now may not need them,” said Tadayuki Kanno, senior vice president Device Business Unit, Opnext.

Sample shipments of the HL6395/96MG and HL6397/98MG series are scheduled to begin in June 2009. Volume shipments are scheduled to begin in July 2009.

Sample shipments of HL63101/63102MG series are scheduled to begin in June 2009. Volume shipments of them are scheduled to begin in August 2009.

About the HL6395/96MG, HL6397/98MG and HL63101/102MG
The Opnext HL6395/96MG and HL6397/98MG offer the world’s highest temperature operation, 60°C with 10 and 20mW in 639nm wavelength band. The Opnext HL63101/102MG offers a temperature operation of 60°C and the world’s lowest operating current with 5mW in 637nm wavelength band. Both technology achievements were accomplished through a new development process which includes an innovative waveguide structure and optimized structure parameter. The active layer thickness and facet reflectivity, results in a lower level of power consumption and extended battery driven time.

Exhibiting at LASER 2009
Opnext’s modules will be on display at LASER World of Photonics 2009 held June 16-18, 2009, at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. The company will be located at Stand #B1.625.
