The Phoenix Companies, Inc. (NYSE: PNX) today announced the promotion of
John T. Mulrain to senior vice president, general counsel and secretary,
effective on June 30. He will replace Tracy L. Rich, who is leaving
Phoenix to become general counsel and corporate secretary at The
Guardian Life Insurance Company of America. Mr. Mulrain will report to
James D. Wehr, Phoenix’s president and chief executive officer.
“John brings insightful and effective counsel to the company in
addressing an array of often complex legal issues. His investment
expertise will prove particularly valuable at this point in our
history,” said Mr. Wehr.
Mr. Mulrain, 59, will be responsible for all legal functions, including
compliance, and he will serve as corporate secretary. Currently, he is
vice president and counsel, focusing primarily on investments and
portfolio management. Mr. Mulrain has been with Phoenix since 1992 in
various capacities within the Law Department. Prior to joining Phoenix,
he was counsel at Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company and a
partner at the law firm of Shipman & Goodwin.
Mr. Mulrain is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association, the American
College of Investment Counsel and the American Council of Life Insurers.
He is also chairman of the investment committee of The Association of
Life Insurance Counsel. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross
and received his J.D. degree from Yale Law School. A resident of
Wethersfield, Conn., he and his wife, Patricia, have two sons.
