Jun. 27--If you are planning any outdoor sports today, wait until the sun goes down.

For the first time this month, temperatures are expected to hit the triple digits, National Weather Service forecasters said.

Expect today's temperature to peak in downtown Sacramento at 104 degrees between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., meteorologist George Cline said. Sunday's highs are expected at 106 degrees.

A high offshore pressure is the culprit, pushing any delta or ocean breeze away from the area, Cline said.

"That usually leaves some warm weather," Cline said.

It's hot, but still not record-setting for this time of the year. Forecasters said the average monthly temperature this June is three degrees below normal.

While most Sacramentans enjoyed the unseasonably cool weather, growers of olives, tomatoes and other crops that benefit from high June temperatures weren't too thrilled.

"Lower heat earlier in the season can delay the harvest and make crops more susceptible to pests later in the season," said Louise Ferguson, a fruit-crop specialist at UC Davis.

But the good news about this weekend's weather is the low humidity.

"It's a fairly dry heat," Cline said. "It'll cool off nicely after sunset."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers this advice for preventing heat-related illness:

-- Drink more non-alcoholic fluids.

-- Stay indoors, and if at all possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. Go to a shopping mall or public library.

-- Take a cool shower or bath.

-- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

-- Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.

-- Check regularly on infants and young children, people aged 65 or older, people with a mental or physical illness, especially heart disease or high blood pressure. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

If you must be outside, they advise:

-- Limit activity to morning and evening hours.

-- Cut down on exercise.

-- Try to rest often in shady areas.

-- Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher with UVA/UVB protection.
