Jul. 1--A man known by employees at a Northampton borough bank faces charges after police said he wielded a knife and robbed the bank Friday afternoon.

William John Muffley, 50, whose last known address was in Catasauqua, was charged Tuesday with the robbery at the Wachovia Bank, 1840 Main St.

Police did not release details about the robbery earlier because Muffley was known by bank employees and investigators feared he would flee the area before police could find him, said Northampton Borough police Chief Ronald Morey.

"We hit a lot of places looking for this guy and we're glad we were able to find him," Morey said Tuesday afternoon.

Neither Morey nor court documents detailed exactly how Wachovia employees knew Muffley.

"They somehow recognized him and that was a huge help," Morey said.

Muffley was arraigned by District Judge Joan Marinkovits on charges of robbery, terroristic threats, theft, receiving stolen property and possession of an instrument of crime. He is in Northampton County Prison under $100,000 bail.

Muffley arrested for the robbery Tuesday in the 1500 block of Main Street, Morey said. The undisclosed amount of stolen cash was not recovered.

According to court records:

Just before 6 p.m. Friday, police were called to the bank for a hold-up. Police said the suspect, later identified as Muffley, smelled of alcohol and threatened tellers.

Muffley passed a note that stated "...before you do anything stupid just give me everything in the drawer and nobody will get killed."

A teller gave Muffley cash and he fled. No one was hurt during the robbery.
