After going dark this past New Year's Eve, the July 4th debut of the new -- 2 million LEDs -- energy efficient PECO Crown Lights will forever change the Philadelphia skyline. The ceremonial "switching-on" will feature a special 7-minute launch show beginning at approximately 9 p.m. during the city's annual Welcome America! festival.
The new Crown Lights are part of a broader environmental / energy efficiency initiative for PECO and its customers. The unveiling will come immediately after PECO's planned July 1, 2009 filing with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PA PUC) for $342 million in programs to help customers reduce and manage their energy use and costs.
The proposed programs -- including CFL giveaways, appliance pick-up, new "time of use" rate options, dramatically increased low-income programs, and many other incentives -- are part of PECO's ongoing efforts to help customers manage the end of rate caps and transition to market-based rates on Jan. 1, 2011. When approved, the programs will help customers reduce energy use by more than 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours by 2013. Other efforts to help customers include PECO's robust power purchasing strategy to secure the lowest possible prices for customers.
"Our Crown Lights are a wonderful way we can shine a light on all of our region's community organizations and non-profits, and I am thrilled to bring them back ... better than ever," said Denis O'Brien, president and CEO of PECO. "But, in addition to being a remarkable civic landmark, the new energy efficient Crown Lights also are a public display of how PECO is leading the way in the areas of energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. Not only are we helping our customers use less energy, we also are doing it ourselves."
PECO has been displaying messages atop its 23rd and Market Street headquarters since July 4, 1976. Since that time, the company has saluted local community and non-profit organizations with more than 17,500 messages. The new system was installed by C. Erickson and Sons in conjunction with YESCO Electronics. To submit a community message for consideration visit www.peco.com/CrownLights, e-mail PECOCrownLights@exeloncorp.com, or call 215-841-5110.
Other PECO environmental projects include the installation of a green roof on the company's Center City headquarters; the opening of PECO's first green building' in West Chester, recently awarded silver certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED); improvements to secure LEED certification for many other company work sites; the increased use of hybrid and biodiesel vehicles; and support for community environmental projects.
These efforts are a component of Exelon 2020: A Low-Carbon Roadmap, the comprehensive environmental strategy of PECO's parent company. Exelon 2020 sets the goal of reducing, offsetting or displacing more than 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020. This is more than the company's current annual carbon footprint and is equivalent to taking nearly 3 million cars off American roads and highways.
